Description
Large Early Alabama State Flag with Red St. Andrew's Cross, Cotton Bunting, c. 1895–1918 (Spanish–American War Era)
A striking and historically resonant example of the Alabama State flag, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, shortly after the design was officially adopted in 1895. The flag features a bold red St. Andrew's Cross (saltire) appliquéd onto a soft ecru cotton field, all executed in cotton bunting with a hand-loomed linen hoist binding. The hoist retains its original forged iron storm clips, a detail associated with military and statehouse-grade outdoor flags rather than domestic or school use.
The scale (approximately framed 48" x 49") and construction indicate production for public civic display"”likely a courthouse, state building, National Guard armory, or regimental encampment. This is the exact style of Alabama state flag in use during the Spanish–American War period (1898) and continuing into the early years of World War I. The surface bears expected age toning, outdoor weathering, and honest patina, which lend the piece warmth and authenticity.
Now presented archivally mounted in a simple white shadow-box frame, the flag reads as both a powerful graphic statement and a meaningful piece of Southern and American history.
