Description
18th Century Tortoiseshell and Silver-Mounted Perfume Etui with Glass Bottle
England or France, circa 1775–1790
Dimensions: 2.5" H × 1.25" W × 0.5" D
A fine late 18th-century tortoiseshell and silver-mounted perfume case, housing its original glass scent bottle with faceted stopper. The elegant case is veneered in richly mottled tortoiseshell, polished to a translucent amber-brown glow, and reinforced with applied silver bands and riveted mounts. The hinged lid, with silver strengthening plates, lifts to reveal the original hand-blown and cut-glass bottle, perfectly fitted within the interior.
Objects of this type belonged to the world of Enlightenment luxury, when personal grooming and toilette culture became a mark of refinement and social standing. Perfume was not only fashionable but also considered protective against disease, and portable scent bottles such as this allowed a lady or gentleman to carry precious oils or spirits discreetly. The use of tortoiseshell"”a costly imported material"”combined with silver fittings, signaled wealth and sophistication.
The construction and unmarked mounts suggest English or French origin, with stylistic features aligning most closely to late Georgian workmanship, circa 1775–1790. Comparable pieces are held in decorative arts collections and are increasingly scarce, particularly with their original glass bottles intact.
