We have here a very lovely realistic oil painting oval portrait of a bishop , from nowadays Belgium in the traditional outfit with on the side the coat of arms with 6 tassels that show it s level in the church , indeed if you have 6 tassels on each side of the hat it for a bishop otherwise more, would be for a cardinal . We believe this painting to be from the 1700 as the cracks in painting are very small and regular also it appears it s on it s original canevas that is very thick a good sign of age as during the 1800 hundreds canvas would be finer . The frame is from the 1800 hundreds. The interesting thing here is that this portrait is not stereotype or academic but more realistic slightly naive that gives to it a very charming feeling , a certain kindness in the eyes with a subjected smile . This portrait comes with a card speaking about the coat of arm that seems to be the family Ghiselin dit Vlieghe and mention Pierre-Robert Giselin dit Vlieghe that dit in 1784 in a abbey in Tronchiennes , this card was send in 1920 to the owner of this painting that apparently wanted to research the Portrait. All this said this is a rare and lovely piece that collector of coat of arms or ecclesiastic portrait would love view the historic importance of it , or just would bring a very interesting feel in any interior. Size of painting with out frame is 19" on13.25" ,with frame 25" don 18"25 ,note the original hook.
