About Artist Jason Langa is an emerging contemporary figurative painter and printmaker based in Johannesburg, South Africa. His primary medium is oil paint and in other works, he employs the medium of printmaking in its various techniques. His immediate community are the main source of inspiration for his subjects and coupled with his use of colour to represent skin tones, he aims to celebrate the life and times of his subjects while also creating an emotional connection between his work and the viewer. Langa has exhibited prints and participated in various Artist Proof Studio-related projects such as the Student Lockdown Collection (2020), Green Economic Recovery project (2020) as well as the Waste Reclaimers, at Documenta 15, Kassel, Germany, as part of the APS, UJ & UP student print collaboration exchange (2022). He has also exhibited his paintings at Denzil's & Jo Gallery, Melville (2022) and has collaborated with Doktor and Misses and contributed artworks for a set design for Netflix (2022). His work has also been featured in physical publications namely Nokutela Mdima-Dube 1873-1917 in collaboration with Asanda Sizani and Legacy Creates (2022) as well as issue 13 of the Iqhawe Magazine publication (2023). Artist Statement My work is a direct representation of the people I meet daily's life. I seek to celebrate their existence in the most mundane of ways, as well as the things they do for consolation and joy. I am inspired by their ways of living, putting into perspective the various ways in which people seek joy and tranquillity, regardless of the circumstances and problems they may face, which frequently prevent them from succeeding in their endeavours. Colour is used in my work to elicit various emotions. I feel that each person perceives a certain colour differently, and I hope to use this to provide an emotional connection and layer to my work. I am intrigued by how different we are as humans as a result of my experiences and personal relationships with my subjects. Although we share many similarities, I am always in search of the characteristics that distinguish us, from behavioural patterns to emotional intelligence and awareness. These aspects continue to be the driving force of inspiration for this body of work. The blue skin tone is a significant theme in my body of work, and it largely conveys notions of royalty and power, implying that as black people, we are deserving of an existence to be proud of. My use of soft pastel colours for the backdrops is intended to evoke nostalgia in the viewer, reminding them of periods in their own lives when they felt the most mental and physical stability.
