Description
[Sheet 5 from John Rocque's A Topographical Survey of the County of Berks]. A single map sheet from John Rocque’s scarce eighteen-sheet A Topographical Survey of the County of Berks (1761). We can find no evidence that this sheet has ever previously been offered for sale individually. Rocque’s survey is the only pre-1800 large-scale map of the county, executed at the exceptional scale of two inches to the mile—one of only thirteen English county maps ever produced at this scale. The survey was carried out by Josiah Ballard and engraved by Richard Benning and L. F. Deharme. Ultimately published as a map of Berkshire, the project was originally conceived to encompass Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, and Oxfordshire; only the Berkshire section was completed (although much of the historic county now falls within Oxfordshire). Perhaps because of this broader conception, Rocque—unusually for a single-county survey—extended the mapping on several sheets into the neighbouring counties. The series stands as a foundational large-scale county survey and an essential early record of Berkshire and its surrounding districts. Rocque’s work represents the pinnacle of mid-eighteenth-century English topographical engraving, combining decorative refinement with exceptional survey accuracy. This sheet covers: Hungerford; Kintbury; Inkpen; Shalbourne; Lambourn; Eastbury; East Garston; Great Shefford; Wickham; Boxford; Chaddleworth; Hamstead Marshall. River Kennet by Rocque, John. Published 1761. Antique 18th century folio map with parish boundaries indicated in original outline colour. Size 66 x 51 cm | 26.0 x 20.0 inches. Condition: Good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. This is a folding map.
