Description
Rochester inscrib'd to Sr. Thomas Palmer Bart & Sr. Jon. Jennings Knt. Mem[be]rs. of Parl[ia]m[en]t for ye City.. A large and finely engraved prospect of Rochester, Chatham and Strood, viewed from an elevated position on the Strood side of the River Medway, looking east towards Sheerness (named) and the Thames Estuary beyond. Shipping animates the river, while the Cathedral dominates the skyline beside the medieval bridge. The Chatham Dockyard, with its storehouses and pay office, is clearly identified, underlining the area’s naval importance. The panorama is flanked by finely detailed architectural vignettes depicting the west front of the Cathedral, the Court Hall, Market House, Grammar School, and St William’s Hospital for Poor Travellers, together forming a comprehensive visual survey of the city’s civic, religious, and charitable institutions. The engraving is inscribed to Sir Thomas Palmer and Sir John Jennings, Members of Parliament for the city. A highly decorative and informative early topographical view, and an important visual record of one of Kent’s historic cathedral cities. . Thomas Badeslade delin. John Harris Sculp. Published 1719.
