Description
Set of three antique Japanese nesting bowls features exquisite hand-painted decoration in the Imari style with strong Kutani influence. Each bowl showcases a finely detailed interior scene of children at play, rendered in expressive overglaze enamels of red, gold, and black on a white porcelain base. These joyful figures, a traditional motif known as karako, symbolize innocence, happiness, and good fortune in Japanese decorative arts. The figural imagery is surrounded by ornate textile-inspired borders, including brocade and geometric patterns reminiscent of Japanese kimono designs. The decoration covers nearly every surface of the bowl, reflecting the richly adorned aesthetic characteristic of Imari porcelain.
Largest is 9" x 3", smallest is 7"x 2.25"
The underside of the largest bowl bears a red painted mark reading ä¹è°· (Kutani), confirming the set's production in the Kutani tradition. This style, originating in Ishikawa Prefecture, is known for its vivid, opaque overglaze colors and narrative scenes. The simple, hand-painted mark without an English export stamp suggests a production date in the late Meiji period. The lack of a factory or kiln name implies the work of a small workshop or regional artisan, which was typical of the time.
These bowls are excellent examples of cross-regional influence in Japanese porcelain. While the base material and production may be associated with Arita (the center of Imari ware), the expressive storytelling, color palette, and painterly approach speak strongly to Kutani's legacy. The overglaze enameling technique used here involves multiple firings"”first to create the porcelain base, then again at a lower temperature to fuse the vivid enamels and gilding on top. This labor-intensive process gives the bowls their luminous, layered quality.
Rich in color and cultural symbolism, this nesting set offers both beauty and heritage. They make striking display pieces, whether stacked or shown individually, and are an exceptional find for collectors of Japanese export porcelain and decorative arts.
