Description
The gilded surface (water gilding or oil gilding on gesso and bole) is typical of frames from this period, especially in Europe.
The ornate, heavy carving with grapevine and leaf motifs is consistent (8" wide) with the Victorian era (ca. 1850–1890).
The design of grapevine and acanthus leaves is common in French and Italian frames, though also popular in England and the U.S. in the Victorian period.
The deep relief carving and heavy gilding lean more toward French (Napoleon III / Second Empire style, ca. 1850–1870) or Italianate revival, though it's possible it was made in England or America in imitation of continental styles.
Based on label in back of frame used have painting originally.
