Description
Coast of Grand Manan Island, is a fine example of the coastal scenes for which Hudson River School painter Alfred Thompson Bricher is known. The watercolor on paper measures 10 x 21 inches (sight size) and is signed by Bricher at the lower left. The work is framed in a period appropriate frame and ready to hang.
Alfred T. Bricher was born to Elizabeth Muir and William Bricher on April 10, 1837 in Portsmouth New Hampshire. By 1858, Bricher announced himself a professional painter, though he was mainly self-taught. Bricher's subtle and serene style classified him as a premier painter of seascapes and ranked him among such other notable luminists as Martin Johnson Heade and John Frederick Kensett. He was known especially for his coastal scenes painted in Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island and Long Island between 1870 and 1890. Bricher exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Boston Athenaeum, the Brooklyn Art Association and the Boston Art Club.
Bricher's oeuvre attracted commissions from Louis Prang & Company as well as the patronage of well-known collector George Walter Vincent Smith and dealer James D. Gill, both very active in the arts community of Springfield, Massachusetts. His paintings later entered the permanent collections of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, Albany Institute of History and Art, Wesleyan University Art Center, Amherst College Art Gallery, Boston Public Library, and other esteemed institutions. One can also see paintings by Bricher at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, High Museum of Art, and Metropolitan Museum of Art.
