(1823 - 1895) Confederate brigadier general who fought at First Bull Run, Seven Pines, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. At Gettysburg he was severely wounded and captured during Pickett's charge. Partly-printed check engrossed and signed by Kemper, 6.5 x 2.5 in., Richmond, Nov. 4, 1882, drawing on the State Bank of Virginia to pay 'Wm. H. Matthews' the sum of $75.00. Fine, matted with a portrait and set into a wood frame.
