(1805-1877) U.S. Navy rear admiral, Farragut’s second in command during the advance up the Mississippi River. Upon arriving at New Orleans, Farragut sent Bailey ashore to accept the city’s surrender, and he and Lt. George Perkins walked alone through the city, surrounded by a Confederate mob, to City Hall, where they were rebuffed by mayor John Monroe. Scarce partly-printed D.S. ‘T. Bailey’, 1p. 8 x 2.25 in., New York, Aug. 1, 1850, a pay receipt issued by a purser at the New York Navy Yard. Bailey signs at bottom right in black ink. Slightly ragged at the edges where detached from a larger sheet, otherwise in fine condition. SOLD WITH: A good content war-date manuscript L.S., 1p. 4to., Schenectady, June 4, 1862, to Bailey from his brother-in-law, Jewish-American merchant, Army officer and politician MORDECAI MYERS (1776-1871). Myers offers his congratulations to Bailey for his successful role in the New Orleans campaign. In part: ‘…I was delighted to hear that you had honorably discharged your duty in the very handsome honorable and dangerous position in which you were placed as second in Command of the fleet of the attacking party and that you have had the good fortune to escape unhurt. It must be highly gratifying to you who have been so long in the Navy & performed so much sea service to have been placed in a command furnishing you an opportunity to show your bravery as well as skill as an officer. I hope you will find the duty of Commander of the Navy Yard at Sacketts Harbor a pleasant and agreeable command…’ He signs ‘M Myers’ in black ink at the conclusion.
