Description
A very attractive Union artilleryman’s uniform jacket, constructed of heavy, indigo blue-dyed wool, and decorated with worsted herringbone piping and features four rows of piping at the front collar, both in artillery red. The jacket front is closed with twelve original brass ‘Eagle Shield’ cuff-size buttons securely sewn to the flap edge with brown thread, with two additional buttons on each side of the collar, and two more at each cuff. All buttons present are unmarked. The collar is fitted with a black-japanned metal loop, but is missing the corresponding hook closure. Additional red piping decorates the buttonhole side of the front flap and runs along the entire bottom edge of the jacket, and forms chevrons at the cuffs. The buttonholes are strong and tight with no tearing. The reverse of the jacket is fitted with two belt-rest pads, with additional piping rising from the pads to the shoulder. Both pads show strong stitching and no tearing. The jacket is line with rough-spun brown wool, with the sleeves lined with taupe muslin cloth. The right-hand sleeve shows an illegible black ink stamp. The piping at the waist is frayed in one spot, with some losses to the stitching at the left-hand cuff, otherwise in very good to fine condition overall.
