Description
(1857 - 1930) Twenty-seventh President of the United States and Supreme Court Chief Justice. A.L.S. as President on White House letterhead, 2+pp. 8vo, Washington, Dec. 26, 1910 to Mrs. R. Goodwyn Rhett, the wife of the mayor of Charleston. In part: '...I regret to say that Helen [Taft] has [engagements] on the dates you mention in your note for the [?] ball. She does not know as well as I do the opportunity she misses...' He mentions the hospitality he often encounters in Charleston, and sends 'the best photograph I have...' Regrettably, much of the letter is badly damp stained, thus sold as is. Taft visited the home, once belonging to John Rutledge, in 1909 and again in 1910.
