Holmes of Fayetteville, a veteran of the 72nd N.C.Regiment. Taft mentions that he had met the colonel while serving as a judge on the Circuit Court of Appeals and praises the man's reputation as an attorney: '...the country can ill afford to lose such men...' Very good.
