
Description
(1808 – 1897) English-born American artist who pioneered mezzotint engraving. Sartain was also a publisher, and was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1897. He lies in a mass grave in Philadelphia, his original headstone (and thousands more) were dumped into the Delaware River to serve as the foundations for the Betsy Ross Bridge. Good content A.L.S. on his letterhead bearing the Order of the Crown of Italy, 1p. 8vo., Philadephia, Feb. 7, 1893 to 'Mr. Cameron', very likely artist David Young Cameron (1865-1910), a prominent up and coming Scottish etcher. In part: '...I am glad your fine picture is having such an airing, and adding to your reputation in fresh fields and pastures new. I have read the well-deserved notices you were so good as to send me, and have saved them...' Lightly toned, otherwise fine.
