(1921 - 1967) British speed record breaker who broke eight absolute world speed records on water and on land in the 1950s and 1960s. Fine content T.L.S. with holograph closing and emendation, 1p. 4to., Surrey, Dec. 4, 1950, to Campbell’s friend, wing commander and author Douglas A. Young-James, in part: ‘...Our activities with ‘Blue Bird’ this year were, to say the least, severely hampered by the most appalling weather conditions…we experienced over 60 [in.] of rain. Negotiations are at present going on for us to visit Italy…many thanks for your kind invitation to the Aspian Society Dinner…if I may I would like to leave this date open, for it will be round about the time we shall have to leave for the Continent should we be going…’. He adds in holograph: ‘Good show & greatest congratulations’. One small hole at upper-left, else boldly penned and very good. Douglas James-Young was the author of several books including ‘Memoirs of an Asp’ and a biography of Campbell, ‘Douglas Campbell: An Informal Biography’.
