[Americana] (Kennedy, Robert F.) Funeral Mourning Candles

(Arlington, ca. June 8, 1968). Wax candles, 9 1/2 and 10 inches tall. Both wicks darkened from use. Mounted to a mat, above an engraved plaque that reads "Robert F. Kennedy Arlington June 8, 1968." In frame, 15 x 6 in. From the collection of Lester Hyman.

A rare survival, a pair of mourning candles distributed to the attendees at the funeral ceremony of Robert F. Kennedy in Arlington National Cemetery on June 8, 1968.

Printed note, taped to the back of the frame reads, "On June 8, 1968, Robert Kenney was buried alongside his brother. Because of a delay, the funeral service had to eb postponed until late at night, so 1500 candles were distributed to the mourners. This is the only time a funeral service has taken place at night at Arlington National Cemetery."

Lester Hyman (1931-2025) was an American attorney, and longtime influential member of the Democratic Party, in addition to being a close family friend of the Kennedys.
