Lot comprised of approx. 115 cabinet photographs of mid-to-late 19th century men, women, and children, many unidentified with the exception of a small sampling of academic subjects. Photographers/publishers include J. Notman and Notman Photographic Co. (Boston), Bogardus (New York), C.M. Bell (Washington, DC), Gutekunst (Philadelphia), Howell (New York), Rockwood (New York), Brisbois (Chicago), Kurtz (New York), Ehrlich (New York), Sarony (New York), Mora (New York), Houseworth (San Francisco), Pach Bros. (New York), Wilhelm (New York), Fredricks (New York), Thorp (Washington, DC), Rau (Philadelphia), Warren (Cambridgeport, MA), Rocher (Chicago), Prof. Erlich (New York), Gilbert & Bacon (Philadelphia), Stokes and Lothrop (Philadelphia), Rice (Washington, DC), Sarony (New York), Fassett (Washington, DC), Root (Chicago), Brisbois (Chicago), and Stockton Stokes & D. Lothrop (Philadelphia). Images in varying conditions though most feature some toning and spotting, with wear to mount edges and corners. Some edges and corners of mounts and prints trimmed.
Highlights include: 29 cabinet cards taken by J. Notman or the Notman Photographic Co. (Boston, MA). While most subjects are unidentified, two include modern identifications. Identified subjects include Charles Wiliam Eliot and Henry Winkley, William Notman was a Scottish-Canadian photographer with an international reputation. He was based in Montreal but had several studio locations and maintained seasonal branches at both Harvard and Yale to capitalize off of the student populations. John Sloan Notman was the younger brother of William, and he quickly established a photography studio that was an important diversified photographic business. The unidentified subjects represented in this selection of images by Notman may have been teachers or students of Yale or Harvard. -- 9 cabinet cards of young women and men, each identified on verso as students from the graduating class of 1882 at Fort Edward Collegiate Institute in Fort Edward, NY, credited to Schermerhorn (Fort Edward, NY). The school offered college prep courses and commercial courses for business oriented and teacher training programs. -- Cabinet card, group portrait of the graduating class of 1881 at Fort Edward Collegiate Institute by Wm. Mims (Fort Edward, NY). -- 5 cabinet cards of civilians, each housed in the original photographer's paper sleeve, credited to Wilhelm (New York). -- A small sampling of images including period or modern identifications, and some appear to be autographed by the subject. Identified subjects include Prof. Tyndall, Prof. Proctor, educator Andrew Dickson White, Thomas Stockton, "Lide" Harris Hames, A.P. Kitchman, F.B. Huntington, Mayor Stokley, -- And others.
