Description: Up for sale are two books by Charles Dickens both entitled Charles Dickens's Works published by the American News Company, New York. One book contains Our Mutual Friend and states it is Vol. I of two volumes. The other book contains Sketches by Boz and A Tale of Two Cities and does not refer to any other volumes.
There is no publication date in either book and these books are not listed anywhere that I can locate. I was told by an expert it may be an unauthorized printing of his work where he received no payment, and that this was something that happened with authors during the late 1800's and early 1900's.
There is a preface dated 1850 in the book that contains Sketches by Boz and A Tale of Two Cities, but else no other date is found in either book.
The book containing Sketches by Boz and A Tale of Two Cities is in rough condition while the other book - Our Mutual Friend-is in much better condition with tight binding and no loose pages, light edge bumping to all edges, spine top and bottom bumped, stamped previous owner's information on fep, staining on top edges of pages, pages darkened from age. The book in rough condition - Sketches by Boz and A Tale of Two Cities - also shows pages darkened due to age, staining top and bottom edges of pages, staining about 1/4 from bottom of page into inside of pages for about 60 pages at end of book. Front cover separated at hinge, torn fep, hinge cracked on back cover, writing & stamp on facing fep; title page detached, with edges creased all around.
These two books are unusual and apparently extremely rare as no mention is made of them anywhere. Books measure 7 1/2 L x 5 1/4 W x 1 1/2 H. Our Mutual Friend is 428 pgs. with two double sided pages of advertising after the text. Sketches by Boz and A Tale of Two Cities is 371 pages, with no advertising at the end of the book.
