Description: Up for sale is a fascinating antique book, Vol. II of a 2-volume set entitled Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans, 1864, Johnson, Fry & Co. Illustrated. 598 pps. Full title listed on title page reads: National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans From Original Paintings by Alonzo Chappel with Biographies by E.A. Duyckinck, Vol. 2.Heavy padded leather or leather like boards with gilt decorative title and embossed decoration to front cover, gilt titles on spine. Spine has six sections of which the topmost one is almost entirely missing and bottom section has chipped off on the lower edge and left side. Raised ridges separate each section. Cover is worn at extremities especially at corners as would be expected with scuffing to front cover. Gilt titling and decoration are still bright and not worn. Gilt page edges all around.
Missing rear board; front cover and spine reattached. Fep has decorative former owner bookplate attached. Brown endpapers. Text block is intact, with no missing or loose pages. Tissue protection to frontis of Washington Irving & to title page. Some ink staining to page edges which does not interfere with the text or the illustrations; there is no writing anywhere within text block or on end papers. Pages have some age toning; light water stains to first ten or so pages on upper right edge. Bfep has a few surface scratches, wear to outer edge, piece missing on lower right edge, & one closed tear; last 3 pages and tissue protector are creased at upper & lower page edges, with some minor chipping at edges.The illustrations in this book are finely and exquisitely detailed and are a fascinating glimpse of the movers and shakers, the most influential people in the United States at a pivotal time in the history of the country. This a great collectible piece of American history!
