Description

Chinese pottery figure depicting a standing court lady in the style of Tang dynasty tomb figures. The figure is shown wearing a long flowing robe with hands concealed within the sleeves, a posture typical of Tang court attendants. The head is adorned with an elaborate high coiffure, reflecting the fashionable hairstyles associated with Tang dynasty aristocratic women.Traces of original painted pigments remain visible, including red and green accents on the robe and face, with natural burial-style surface encrustation and wear adding to the aged appearance. Tang-style court lady figures such as this were traditionally produced as burial objects intended to accompany the deceased in the afterlife.
