Walter Lantz (1899–1994) was an influential American cartoonist, animator, and producer best known as the creator of Woody Woodpecker. Beginning his career in the silent film era, Lantz founded Walter Lantz Productions and produced animated shorts for Universal Pictures for decades. Woody Woodpecker debuted in 1940 and became one of the most recognizable animated characters of the 20th century, cementing Lantz’s legacy in American animation history.
