Sammy L. Davis (b. 1946) received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during the Vietnam War. On November 18, 1967, despite being wounded, he manned a howitzer and crossed a river to rescue fellow soldiers during a brutal enemy assault at Firebase Cudgel. His courage earned him comparisons to the fictional Forrest Gump, as actual footage of his medal ceremony was used in the film.
