The typed message, on embossed British Embassy letterhead from Washington, D.C., reads: “I have much pleasure in complying with your request for my autograph.”

Philip Henry Kerr, 11th Marquess of Lothian (1882–1940), was a distinguished British diplomat and statesman who served as Ambassador to the United States from 1939 until his death in 1940. A close adviser to Prime Minister David Lloyd George and a key figure in the Round Table Movement, Lothian was instrumental in strengthening Anglo-American relations at the onset of World War II, helping pave the way for U.S. support through the Lend-Lease Act.
