Herzl Shafir (1929–2021) was an IDF major general who rose from the Palmach and Armored Corps to head the Manpower Directorate during the Yom Kippur War. He later served as assistant head of the Operations Directorate and commanded the Southern Command (1976–1978), after earlier leading the 7th Armored Brigade. His service spanned Israel’s formative conflicts, including 1948, Sinai, the Six-Day War, and the War of Attrition. After retiring from the army he became Israel’s seventh police commissioner (1980–1981) and later chaired public committees on national service and emergency preparedness.
