Yigal Allon (1918–1980) co-founded and commanded the Palmach, leading key fronts in Israel’s 1948 War of Independence before rising to IDF commander. Entering politics, he served as Labor minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and Acting Prime Minister in 1969. As Foreign Minister (1969–1974) he advanced the influential “Allon Plan” for the West Bank and promoted strategic settlement in Israel’s periphery. A kibbutz pioneer and author, he shaped Israel’s security doctrine and civic development.
