The group includes Series 1976 $2 notes depicting Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and John Trumbull’s famous Declaration of Independence painting on the reverse. Many of the notes have been enhanced with affixed U.S. postage stamps and official-style cancellations commemorating historical events or locations, including Monticello, Virginia cancellations dated April 13, 1976—issued in conjunction with the American Bicentennial celebrations.
Such stamped and canceled $2 notes became popular collectible souvenirs during the 1976 Bicentennial era, when the redesigned $2 bill was reintroduced to circulation. Collectors and visitors often had the notes stamped and postmarked at historically significant locations tied to the American founding.
