William H. Taft autographed typed letter (TLS) on personal letterhead, dated November 21, 1918, from 930 Southern Building, Washington, D.C. The letter is addressed to Honorable William E. Mason, House of Representatives, and thanks him for the “tender of your services,” with a characteristically genial reference to weight loss: “men of our habit are to be felicitated on any such result.” Taft notes he has transmitted Mason’s letter to Secretary Short and closes with a fountain pen signature, “Wm H Taft.”
Near fine condition.
William Howard Taft (September 15, 1857 – March 8, 1930) served as the 27th President of the United States (1909–1913) and later as the 10th Chief Justice of the United States, the only individual in American history to hold both offices. A close associate and successor to Theodore Roosevelt, Taft’s post-presidential judicial career cemented his legacy as a pivotal figure in both the executive and judicial branches of the federal government.
