Details:
Frank Wheaton autographed Civil War military appointment document issued for the Second Regiment of Rhode Island Volunteers, appointing Charles J. Tinkam as First Sergeant of Company D. The printed document, completed in manuscript, bears Wheaton’s signature as “Commanding the Regiment” and is dated July 1, 1862, issued from regimental headquarters.
The document formally appoints Tinkam to the rank of First Sergeant, citing confidence in his patriotism, valor, fidelity, and abilities, and directing him to faithfully discharge the duties of his office according to the rules and discipline governing the United States Army. The appointment was issued while the regiment was serving with the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War.
The piece shows heavy age-related wear including fold separations, edge losses, and scattered staining consistent with field-issued Civil War documents with repairs on verso.
Frank Wheaton (1833–1903) served as a Union general during the American Civil War. A graduate of West Point, he commanded brigades and divisions in the Army of the Potomac, participating in major engagements including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the Overland Campaign. Wheaton later commanded troops during the Shenandoah Valley operations and remained in the U.S. Army after the war, eventually retiring with the rank of brigadier general.
