David Dixon Porter autographed naval orders document issued from the Office of the Admiral, Washington, D.C., dated May 1, 1879, directing a naval inspection assignment. The manuscript letter is written on lined Navy Pay Office stationery and is signed twice by Porter, including his full signature “D. D. Porter, Admiral U.S. Navy” at the conclusion and an additional autograph on the reverse.
The document is addressed to Chief Engineer J. W. Moore, U.S.N., of Champlain, Clinton County, New York, instructing him to proceed to Norfolk, Virginia, by Monday evening and report at 10:00 a.m. to Commodore G. H. Cooper for the inspection of the U.S.S. Marion. Upon completion of the inspection assignment, Moore is instructed to return to his home.
The piece bears period Navy Pay Office mileage and accounting stamps, along with a Navy Department approval stamp dated May 13, 1879, signed by Secretary of the Navy Richard W. Thompson. The reverse of the document contains Porter’s additional autograph along with period docketing.
Condition shows expected fold lines, minor edge wear, and light toning consistent with age and handling.
David Dixon Porter (1813–1891) was one of the most important naval commanders of the American Civil War. A foster brother of Admiral David G. Farragut, Porter commanded Union naval forces in major operations including the Mississippi River campaigns, the Vicksburg Campaign, and the Red River Campaign. In 1870 he was appointed Admiral of the United States Navy, among the highest ranks in the service, and later served as Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy.
