David Dixon Porter autographed manuscript naval order issued from the Office of the Admiral, Washington, D.C., dated February 3, 1880, directing an inspection assignment relating to the USS Powhatan. The document is written on lined Navy Pay Office stationery and signed by Porter at the conclusion, “D. D. Porter, Admiral U.S. Navy.”
Addressed to Chief Engineer J. W. Moore of Champlain, Clinton County, New York, the letter instructs Moore to proceed to the Norfolk Navy Yard, Virginia, by the evening of February 6th, and to report at 10:00 a.m. to Commodore G. H. Cooper for the inspection of the U.S.S. Powhatan. Porter further directs that upon completion of the assignment Moore may return to his home.
The document bears period Navy Pay Office stamps and endorsements, including an approval stamp from the Navy Department dated February 12, 1880, signed by Secretary of the Navy R.W. Thompson. Notations on the reverse reference Norfolk Navy Yard, Commodore Cooper, and the Powhatan inspection.
Condition shows typical handling wear including fold lines, minor edge losses, and light toning consistent with age.
David Dixon Porter (1813–1891) was one of the most important naval commanders of the American Civil War. A member of a distinguished naval family and the foster brother of Admiral David G. Farragut, Porter commanded Union naval forces in major campaigns including the Mississippi River operations, the Vicksburg Campaign, and the Red River Campaign. In 1870 he was appointed Admiral of the United States Navy, one of the highest ranks in the service, and later served as Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy.
