Details:
Two Civil War documents relating to the 199th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, including a manuscript order written in Richmond shortly after the fall of the Confederate capital and an official War Department Ordnance Office letter dated near the end of the war.
The first document is a handwritten General Orders manuscript dated January 10, 1865, Richmond, Virginia, issued from the headquarters of the 199th Pennsylvania Volunteers. The order relieves 1st Lieutenant A. M. Miller, Acting Adjutant of the 199th Pennsylvania Volunteers, from his duties and directs him to report back to his company commander. The order further notes that 1st Lieutenant Horace Evans, who had been appointed Adjutant of the regiment by the Governor of Pennsylvania, is formally recognized in that role and will be obeyed and respected accordingly. The order is written in manuscript and signed by Horace Evans, 1st Lt. & Adjutant, by command of Colonel C. Albright.
The second document is an official Ordnance Office, War Department letter dated April 29, 1865, Washington, D.C. The printed form confirms that the ordnance and ordnance stores return for the 199th Pennsylvania Infantry, 24th Army Corps, for the first quarter of 1865 had been examined by the Ordnance Office and referred to the Second Auditor for settlement.
Both documents show typical Civil War-era wear including fold lines, light toning, and minor handling wear.
The 199th Pennsylvania Infantry was organized late in the Civil War in 1864 and served in the Army of the James, participating in operations around Richmond and Petersburg during the final months of the conflict. The regiment was present during the closing campaigns that culminated in the evacuation of Richmond and the surrender of Confederate forces in April 1865.
