Details:
Edward Dunn Civil War document group consisting of two original manuscript and partially printed military documents relating to his service in the 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry during the American Civil War.
The first document is a large muster-in roll dated March 29, 1864, enrolling Edward Dunn as a 1st Lieutenant in the 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry, Army of the Potomac. The partially printed roll includes manuscript entries detailing Dunn’s enrollment in Washington, D.C., his age (22), and remarks noting his promotion from 2nd Lieutenant to 1st Lieutenant and prior service as a 1st Sergeant. The document is signed by the mustering officer and measures as a typical oversized Civil War muster roll with printed column headings and handwritten service details.
Accompanying the roll is a handwritten extract of Special Orders No. 65, issued from Headquarters Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac, Camp near Potomac Creek, May 16, 1863. The order records the discharge of 1st Sergeant Edmund Dunn of the 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry to allow him to accept a commission as 2nd Lieutenant, effective February 25, 1863. The document is signed in manuscript by A. J. Alexander, Acting Assistant Adjutant General, by command of Major General Alfred Pleasonton, commander of the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac.
Both documents show typical Civil War period wear with fold lines, light toning, and scattered staining consistent with age and handling.
The 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry served extensively with the Army of the Potomac and participated in numerous major campaigns including actions during the Gettysburg Campaign, operations in Virginia, and later engagements against Confederate cavalry forces under J.E.B. Stuart. Cavalry units such as the 16th Pennsylvania played a crucial role in reconnaissance, screening operations, and rapid battlefield maneuver throughout the later years of the war.
