He succeeded Justice Thurgood Marshall and is the second African American to serve on the Court. Known for his originalist and textualist approach to constitutional interpretation, Thomas has been a consistent and influential voice in Supreme Court jurisprudence for more than three decades. He is currently the longest-serving sitting Justice.
