Potter Stewart (January 23, 1915 – December 7, 1985) served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1958 to 1981, appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Known for his moderate and pragmatic jurisprudence, Stewart often cast pivotal swing votes during a transformative era of constitutional law. He is perhaps most famously associated with his concurring opinion in Jacobellis v. Ohio (1964), in which he wrote of obscenity, “I know it when I see it.”
