Details:
John M. Harlan autographed typed letter, dated March 27, 1961, on Supreme Court of the United States letterhead, “Chambers of Justice John M. Harlan.” Addressed to Stephen Robertson, Features Editor of the Harvard Law Record, the letter courteously declines an invitation to contribute an article due to the pressures of Court work. As a substitute, Harlan notes he is enclosing remarks delivered at the previous year’s Law Day ceremonies in the District, suggesting they may be suitable for reprinting. Signed at the conclusion, “John M. Harlan,” with “Enclosure” noted beneath.
Fine condition.
John Marshall Harlan II (1899–1971) served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1955 to 1971. Appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Harlan became known for his careful, case-by-case approach to constitutional interpretation and his influential opinions in areas including civil liberties, criminal procedure, and the development of the “right to privacy.” His jurisprudence emphasized judicial restraint and respect for precedent, earning him a reputation as one of the Court’s most thoughtful and measured voices during a transformative era in constitutional law.
