William O. Douglas autographed typed letter (TLS), one page on “Supreme Court of the United States” letterhead, Washington, D.C., dated February 29, 1964. Addressed to Mr. E. Joseph Knoll of the Student Bar Association, Georgetown University Law Center, declining an invitation to participate in a Law Day program due to the Court’s all-day conference scheduled for May 1. Signed in blue ink, “W O Douglas,” at the conclusion.

William O. Douglas (1898–1980) served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1939 to 1975, the longest tenure in the Court’s history. Appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Douglas became one of the Court’s most influential and outspoken advocates of civil liberties, environmental protection, and expansive interpretations of the Bill of Rights. His opinions and dissents helped shape modern constitutional law during a transformative period in American jurisprudence.
