Named WWII captured group lot of the US Army 9th Armored division, specifically PFC Alfred Erving Fineberg of Newark, NJ. This lot incudes a large framed WWII USGI "Bring Back" vehicle identification flag captured at the Flossenburg Concentration Camp, a sub-camp to the greater Falkenau in Czechoslovakia. This group lot includes a unit signed flag measuring 50” x 34” on an acid free backing in a professionally built custom frame as well as the PFC capture papers, his combat record, a pair of field glasses and his shaving kit containing an empty pack of German cigarettes. It also includes some of his cavalry pins and binoculars that are in good to fair condition overall. The leather shows signs of dehydration consistent with age and use. The optics are German made, also captured, and are in fair condition and appear relatively hazy when looking through. The body of the binoculars reads Wilh Gorgs Rathenow and Modell Extrahell. PFC Fineburg served in the Arden, Rhineland and several Central European campaigns. He joined the US Army July 8th 1943 and went on to serve through the Korean War. His service record indicate he was a truck driver. He was born in October of 1917. His detailed combat record is included.
Flossenbürg concentration camp, established in May 1938 near the Czech border in Bavaria, Germany, was a Nazi site primarily designed for forced labor in a granite quarry, later expanding into an extensive network of over 100 sub-camps involved in weapon production. It held over 111,000 prisoners, including political prisoners, Jewish people, and homosexuals, with over 30,000 dying from starvation, disease, and brutal treatment.
The Flossenbürg concentration camp was liberated on April 23, 1945, by U.S. forces, specifically the 90th Infantry Division (joined by elements of the 97th). Upon arrival, soldiers found approximately 1,500 to 2,000 sick and weak prisoners remaining, as the SS had forced thousands of others onto death marches just days prior.
