Description
An African Ikul Kuba Sword in very good condition overall. The African Ikul (or Ikula) is a ceremonial short sword or knife from the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, often called a "peace knife." Introduced in the 17th century, these typically unsharpened, leaf-shaped, 10–20 inch iron or wood blades symbolize status, maturity, and peace, rather than combat. Created by King Shyaam aMbul aNgoong to replace the warlike throwing knife (shongo) with a symbol of a peaceful, stable kingdom. A broad, leaf-shaped blade, often with a raised central ridge and incised decorations. The blade can be made of iron, copper, or wood. This one appears to be iron. A wooden handle with a round pommel, frequently featuring detailed, intricate geometric inlays, sometimes made of metal. Historically, it was worn in the back of a man's sash by all adult Kuba men, serving as a display of manhood, authority, and status during dances and ceremonies. Estimated shipping parcel size (LxWxH) 12 inches x 10 inches x 10 inches. Please note, shipping estimates are provided for LiveShipping calculations only and may vary based on weight and location.
