Title: 1748 Version of Evelyn and Wren Plans for London's Reconstruction -- A Plan of London [on Sheet with] A Plan of the City of London after the Great Fire...Cartographer: J Evelyn / C Wren / London Antiq. Soc.Year/Place: 1748, LondonMap Dimension (in.): 18.9 X 13.8 in.Description: Here are two rare plans for London's reconstruction after the great fire (September 2-6, 1666) which burnt 12,000 houses. The plan on top is by Sir J Evelyn created in February 1668 and the bottom plan is by Sir C Wren created soon after the fire in 11 September, 1666. Both believed that post fire there was an opportunity to improve and straighten the road systems and create a better London. King Charles II preferred Wren's plan, but the House of Commons felt speed of recrontruction was more important and the old foundations were used to erect brick buildings; thus, neither plan shown here was executed. Both plans locate St. Paul's Church, the Tower of London, the (London) Bridge, etc. This is a republished version of the original plans in 1748 by Sumptibus Societat Antiquar Lond. (London Antiquarian Society).
