Naturalistic Illusion: Rare Chelsea Porcelain Trompe L'oeil Leaf Dish,
Brown Anchor Period,
Circa. 1758–1760
Description: A superb mid-18th century soft-paste porcelain leaf dish produced by the celebrated Chelsea Porcelain Factory during the Brown/Gold Anchor period (c. 1758–1760).
The dish is modeled with exceptional naturalism as a large, serrated leaf (possibly rhubarb or cabbage) with vivid turquoise-green edges and puce veining, seemingly "draped" over a white openwork basketweave undertray. The central field features a delightful trompe l'oeil (trick of the eye) composition: a ripe pear and a twig bearing two purple plums are painted as if resting directly on the leaf surface. This playful interaction between the molded form and the painted decoration is a hallmark of Chelsea's most sophisticated rococo wares.
Condition: Very good antique condition. Enamels remain bright and unworn. Note: A tiny glaze chip to the front edge of the top leaf has been professionally and invisibly conserved (virtually undetectable to the naked eye).
Measurements:
Width: 10 3/4 inches (27.3 cm)
Depth: 8 3/4 inches (22.2 cm)
Height: 3/4 inch (1.9 cm)
Historical Context:
Under the direction of Nicholas Sprimont, the Chelsea factory set the standard for English porcelain, often drawing inspiration from Meissen and Sèvres but adding a distinctively English botanical charm. "Botanical" and "Leaf" wares were extremely fashionable for dessert services, designed to bring the garden onto the dining table. The addition of trompe l'oeil fruit"”painted to look like real specimens"”added an element of wit and surprise for guests.
