Michael P. Smith (1937-2008) was a celebrated American photographer, primarily known for his extensive documentary work capturing the rich cultural, musical, and spiritual life of New Orleans. His archive is now housed at The Historic New Orleans Collection.
The photograph depicts Thomas A. Dorsey, widely recognized as the "Father of Gospel Music," kneeling in front of the tombstone of gospel legend Mahalia Jackson. The tombstone in the image clearly shows "JACKS"

Condition Notes: The frame is showing signs of wear, especially along the rim that has have lost some paint. Also one side of the actual photograph has some crazing. But the photo was nicely framed and double matted and has overall held up well. In the furutre it should be remounted and reframed to preserve its integrity.
