Description
Impressive 2000s era original oil on board of a water lily pond scene.
Artisan signed, beautifully crafted, and - interestingly - presented in a late 19th C. antique gilt wood frame of the period when this style of plein air painting was originally in vogue.
Dazzling greens, blues, and whites, with pops of yellow and gold.
The presentation on boss and the large brush stroke style gives the piece a texture that is both European ( oh so French) and slightly Japanese - it's wonderful to the eye.
31.5" wide by 19.5" tall.
Frame is significant - 4" deep with four layers of carving and detail.
Discovered in a wonderful Virginia collection of well-travelled collectors - we were lucky to win this one!
In keeping with Aesop's fable, Fox and Crow's Motto is "Beware of False Flattery!" So, with each listing we offer a true confession about the item...
My husband brings home the best paintings! As he often says, "there are a lot of paintings in the world, and a few of them are both good and interesting."
This one is clearly good, and becomes interesting when you consider the artist's perspective on this gorgeous lily pond. It comes at the water centered on the reflection in the pond, not on the larger landscape scene.
Super interesting and engaging to the eye - which makes for a unique and winning artwork in our opinion.
And the counterpoint of a 19th C. layered gilt frame paired with a contemporary painting...highlighting the 100 year spread between the original period off this style (the frame) vs. the artist's tribute to it (the painting). That's really cool.
Bright, bold, and unique - that's good and interesting, indeed.
