This piece was purchased in Shanghai in the late 70's by Americans living abroad. They loved the piece so much they had it transported to their home in Long Island when they left China in the mid 80's. In the states, it became a conversation piece that had many admirers. The design is beautifully illustrated with a rich somewhat mysterious history/stories to tell. It was designed so that each panel is distinct and still connected. It was recently taken apart and requires very minimal adjustment to reattach each panel. The overall condition is still very good, although this is an antique and is showing signs of wear. There are several areas where the lacquer is chipping, mostly along the edges, and the metal hinges are worn and a bit rusty. The actual hand painted design still presents very well. and purchasing this is really preserving a piece of history.
