ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: Paul Lauritz was a highly accomplished Norwegian-American artist who became a central figure in the California art scene. Born in Larvik, Norway in 1889, he emigrated to North America at age 16, eventually settling in Los Angeles in 1919. Lauritz served as President of the prestigious California Art Club (1942-1944) and taught at both the Chouinard Art Institute and Otis Art Institute. He was also a member of the Los Angeles Municipal Art Commission for six years.
While Lauritz became best known for his California desert landscapes and marine paintings, he was a versatile artist whose subjects ranged from portraits to snow scenes. Early in his training, he studied with an English watercolorist in Norway, and watercolor remained an important medium throughout his career. His works are held in museum collections including the Laguna Art Museum, San Diego Museum of Art, UCLA, and the University of Chicago. During WWII, the King of Norway commissioned one of his marine paintings.
