Description
Yorkshire Elegance: Rare Green Glazed Creamware Teapot
Swinton,
Circa 1770
A superb late 18th-century English creamware teapot and cover, produced by the Swinton Pottery (the precursor to Rockingham) in Yorkshire, circa 1770.
The vessel features a classic barrel form, richly decorated with an all-over impressed "rouletted" or engine-turned pattern, which adds texture and depth to the surface. It is finished in a vibrant, translucent lead green glaze, a style popularized by Josiah Wedgwood but masterfully executed here by Yorkshire potters.
Distinctive features include a plain curved spout and an elaborate double-loop reeded handle (often called a "crabstock" or twisted strap handle), which terminates in bold, molded floral and grape leaf appliqués. The domed cover is surmounted by a large, finely modeled flower-head finial resting on a bed of leaves.
Measurements:
Height: 6 inches (15.2 cm)
Length (Handle to Spout): 8 1/2 inches (21.6 cm)
Diameter: 5 inches (12.7 cm)
Condition: Excellent antique condition. Glaze is bright and stable. No chips to the spout or finial (rare for these functional wares).
Literature & Reference:
Alwyn & Angela Cox, Rockingham Pottery & Porcelain, 1745-1842: See Appendix II, #15 for a matching spout mold.
See Appendix I, Illustration 42 for the distinctive floral handle terminal, confirming the Swinton attribution.
Historical Context:
Before the Rockingham factory became famous for its porcelain, the Swinton site produced high-quality earthenware to compete with the Staffordshire potteries. This "Green Glazed" ware was a direct response to Wedgwood's success, but Swinton's versions are often prized for their bolder molding and deeper, gem-like glaze tones.
