ANCIENT VIKING LUNAR/ASTROLOGICAL PENDANT, C.850-950 AD

Description

Silvered bronze. Just under 1 1/8" (1.15" ) width. Broad crescent with a central triangular panel of three nubs. The flanking panels reeded with nub terminals, executed in different levels of relief, perhaps representing a celestial event like an eclipse, an act of the Gods, in two phases. Made by the open-face mold method. Vikings relied on astronomy to navigate and the heavenly bodies had supernatural significance. Professionally refurbished with the silver overlay restored on a modern Sterling silver neck chain. Jewelry gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity.
