Description
The heavy handled pitcher and matching stand have been covered in a thick red glaze. The interior is a dark brown that looks like it was transmuted from the red glaze. The foot ring is unglazed and the base is glazed.
The stand can be placed facing up or down. When the rim is facing up, ice can be placed in the stand and used to help cool the liquid in the pitcher. When flipped, the pitcher can rest on 5 pyramidal "legs" and a candle can be placed in the well to heat the pitcher. Pretty ingeneous!
Both the pitcher and stand have molded marks on their bases that read W. GERMANY. The stand has the word BAY above the German mark. The pitcher has a production number of 140-16.
Bay Keramik, founded in 1933 by Eduard Bay in Ransbach-Baumbach, is a renowned West German pottery manufacturer famous for mid-century "Fat Lava" ceramics, vibrant glazes, and bold, textured designs from the 1960s-70s. We believe that this pitcher was designed by Bodo Mans who designed several sought-after lines for Bay in the early 1960s.
