Description:This is an authentic antique Japanese tsuba for a NIHONTO sword, crafted during the late Edo period. The piece is signed by the artisan HARUMASA and features a profound Zen theme known as Jugyu-zu, or the Ten Ox-Herding Pictures. The design depicts a boy peacefully playing a flute, a scene symbolizing enlightenment and inner harmony. This type of refined sword fitting was highly valued by the cultivated samurai class, Zen practitioners, and tea connoisseurs of the era.

The tsuba is skillfully made from iron with a deep, natural patina that reflects its age. The figure of the boy is rendered in high relief using copper with gold and silver accents, showcasing a remarkable sense of volume and balance. The artist, Harumasa, was active in the Musashi Province and is believed to have worked into the Meiji period. His style shows a clear influence from the Aizu Shoami school, evident in the expressive figures. This is a fine example of craftsmanship intended for a Japanese sword.
