About the Item
A whimsical black onyx and gold bead brooch, circa 1950s. The brooch is designed as a cluster of rounded gold beads, alternating in size and texture, which gives the pin a great dynamic quality. Some of the beads are smooth, while others have a spiral texture. Each bead is punctuated with a small black onyx bead and diamond accent. This Retro 1950s brooch features a distinctive design that's both playful and intricate. We have a bracelet with a similar design to complement this Retro brooch (see pictures 7 and 8). The brooch is made of 18 karat (stamped) yellow gold, platinum, black onyx and diamond. The diamonds are of round brilliant cut, total weight approximately 1.0 carat. The diamonds are set in platinum. The brooch measures 3 1/2" x 1 5/8" (9 x 4.3 centimeters) and weighs 63.9 grams. Stamped with maker's mark OSL and hallmark for 18 karat gold. About Black Onyx Jewelry: Black onyx is renowned for its striking appearance and unique properties. Formed through the slow crystallization of quartz in the presence of water, onyx belongs to the chalcedony family. The gem is often found in areas with volcanic activity. Jewelry designers are drawn to black onyx for its classic elegance and deep, lustrous hues. Black onyx is often used to add sophistication to any design. The stone’s smooth texture allows to capture the essence of refinement and luxury. Black onyx was a perfect gem for the Art Deco era’s sleek lines and geometric shapes. Its smooth texture and bold black-and-white contrast perfectly complemented the era's streamlined aesthetic, particularly when paired with platinum. As a result, black onyx became synonymous with the Art Deco movement, embodying its emphasis on modernity and geometric precision. Among contemporary jewelry makers, the gem finds frequent use in the pieces of all the big brands. Such collections as Perlée and Alhambra by Van Cleef & Arpels are great examples of black onyx’s application.
